India’s largest garbage dumpster blaze killed 27 people in the country’s worst fire disaster in years, authorities said on Saturday.
Firefighters said on Twitter that an 18-year-old woman died in the blaze, which began on Saturday in the southern district of Kanyakumari.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the official death toll was not immediately available.
Fire fighters had been trying to control the fire from the roof of a residential compound where residents were sheltering in a nearby forest.
The fire destroyed one building, which was built in 2007 and was reportedly inhabited by members of the public.
The authorities said in a statement that the fire was caused by a fire extinguisher.
It was not clear whether the fire had been put out by the extinguisher or by a sprinkler system, which could have caused the fire to spread.
